- ➤ Auto Express Mazda will host a Be Moved to Drive fundraiser at Fort LeBoeuf High School today where each Mazda test drive donates $50 toward the high school baseball booster program with a goal of raising $10,000. - ➤ Erie was named one of the top Most Uplifting Cities by UP Entertainment for the second year in a row, with residents recognized for their generosity, optimism, friendliness, volunteerism and spirituality — a list featuring other small and medium communities across America. - ➤ Residents on Harper Drive in Millcreek Township saw their yards and homes damaged when heavy rain flooded basements, backyards and garages on Thursday—forcing a street closure and hospital visits due to sewage backup. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Erie County Technical School approved a plan on Oct 23 to build a solar field that will begin preliminary work later this year and have panels operating by August. The project will install about 2,500 panels on 10 acres, cost $1.25 million with most funds coming from state and federal grants + the school paying under $300,000, and is expected to save nearly $6 million in energy costs over 30 years. - ➤ Gannon University students planted a tiny forest as part of Project NePTWNE on Friday, October 24th, featuring native trees, shrubs, and groundcover to boost biodiversity and manage drainage. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Erie County Executive Brenton Davis will invest ARPA funds to convert a brownfield at 106 E. Main St. in Corry into a workforce center that will offer training in welding, machining and EMS. Davis will announce the project on October 28 at 11 a.m.—a step to build a pipeline of skilled workers for the region. The Erie Times-News
- ➤ The Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority has awarded $100,000 in Renaissance Block grants to Impact Corry, Union City Borough and Girard Downtown to help homeowners pay for repairs such as new windows, doors and roof work—homeowners must match the grant amount for each project. Local officials said the grants will reverse blight along main streets and spur further improvements in neighborhoods. The Erie Times-News
- ➤ Millcreek Township bought the Shrine Club property on West 38th Street and Zuck Road for $3,635,000 and plans to turn the 42-acre site into a community center for walking, biking, and fitness classes—township offices will move from the old Asbury Barn.
