COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Auto Express Mazda will host a Be Moved to Drive fundraiser at Fort LeBoeuf High School today where each Mazda test drive donates $50 toward the high school baseball booster program with a goal of raising $10,000. Owner Joe Askins said 200 test drives are needed and the dealership plans to use the event model to support other local schools in the future.  YourErie.com
  • Erie was named one of the top Most Uplifting Cities by UP Entertainment for the second year in a row, with residents recognized for their generosity, optimism, friendliness, volunteerism and spirituality — a list featuring other small and medium communities across America. The announcement is part of the Uplift Someone initiative that leads up to National Uplift Someone Day on Oct. 30.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Pittsburgh Inn, Erie’s oldest family restaurant, ended an 18-year era as longtime owners Robin and Tom Weunski retired on Friday night—new owners will take over to uphold the venue’s history of military support and community service.  YourErie.com
  • Residents on Harper Drive in Millcreek Township saw their yards and homes damaged when heavy rain flooded basements, backyards and garages on Thursday—forcing a street closure and hospital visits due to sewage backup. Township officials said excessive stormwater overwhelmed the sewer system and urged affected residents to call dispatch for help.  YourErie.com
  • Erie Downtown Partnership hosted a free harvest dinner Friday night at Perry Square to celebrate pay-what-you-can farmers’ markets; local chefs prepared meals with locally grown ingredients—while a produce stand offered affordable fruits and vegetables.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erie County Technical School approved a plan on Oct 23 to build a solar field that will begin preliminary work later this year and have panels operating by August. The project will install about 2,500 panels on 10 acres, cost $1.25 million with most funds coming from state and federal grants + the school paying under $300,000, and is expected to save nearly $6 million in energy costs over 30 years.  The Erie Times-News
  • Gannon University students planted a tiny forest as part of Project NePTWNE on Friday, October 24th, featuring native trees, shrubs, and groundcover to boost biodiversity and manage drainage. Volunteers and local partners worked together to create a space that will support future educational and research activities.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie County Executive Brenton Davis will invest ARPA funds to convert a brownfield at 106 E. Main St. in Corry into a workforce center that will offer training in welding, machining and EMS. Davis will announce the project on October 28 at 11 a.m.—a step to build a pipeline of skilled workers for the region.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority has awarded $100,000 in Renaissance Block grants to Impact Corry, Union City Borough and Girard Downtown to help homeowners pay for repairs such as new windows, doors and roof work—homeowners must match the grant amount for each project. Local officials said the grants will reverse blight along main streets and spur further improvements in neighborhoods.  The Erie Times-News
  • Millcreek Township bought the Shrine Club property on West 38th Street and Zuck Road for $3,635,000 and plans to turn the 42-acre site into a community center for walking, biking, and fitness classes—township offices will move from the old Asbury Barn. Zem Zem Temple will lease and use the property through 2026 while preparations for the center begin no earlier than 2027.  The Erie Times-News

  • On Friday, UMPC Hamot decorated its waiting room with pink and held the 19th annual Mammomarathon to encourage women to get mammograms during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event offered extended hours, walk-in appointments, raffles, refreshments, and a free gift, with the Hamot Health Foundation assisting uninsured women (helping cover screening costs).  YourErie.com

  • Farrell defeated Cathedral Prep 46-7 at Anthony J. Paulekas Stadium—ending Prep’s chance for PIAA Class 5A postseason play for the first time since 1997.  The Erie Times-News
  • Harbor Creek beat rival Iroquois 42 to 8 in the 50th Battle of the Bridge yesterday at Paul J. Weitz Stadium—junior Gavin Zillman scored four first half touchdowns to lead the Huskies to their fifth straight win. The win ended a season that began with a 3 to 6 record and secured strong bragging rights in the long-run series.  The Erie Times-News
