COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At an open house on Wednesday night, officials and community leaders gathered to discuss the future of the former Erie Coke site—saying cleanup will take decades and asking for ideas on green space or tax revenue options. The meeting came one day after a federal case ended with a $700,000 fine for Clean Air Act violations, renewing focus on the site.  YourErie.com

  • Scott Slawson, who has led Erie's largest industrial union for a decade, will become president of the national United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America on Nov. 1—marking his shift from local to national leadership.  The Erie Times-News

  • Millcreek Township School District bought 10 AEDs for its buildings after two recent cardiac arrests—LECOM Health provided an $18,000 grant that reduced each device’s cost to about $1,800.  The Erie Times-News
  • On Oct 8, the 12th annual Manufacturing Day was held at the Bayfront Convention Center where the MBA connected 2,000 students from five counties with local manufacturers and highlighted the industry’s need for skilled workers. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mercy Center for Women faces funding uncertainty as it waits for $100,000 in state budget funds for its Dress for Success program while SNAP and WIC benefits may be cut after November 1st — adding pressure on women and children fleeing abuse and homelessness.  YourErie.com
  • Erie County has opened the Crosswinds Recovery House — an eight-person facility for men in substance use recovery — on the west side to provide stable housing. The county is working with Pyramid Healthcare and plans to add a women’s recovery house soon.  YourErie.com
  • Erie County’s municipal election will occur on Nov. 4 — early in-person voting is underway, voter registration will close on Oct. 20, and absentee ballot applications must be submitted by Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. Mail ballots are expected to begin arriving around Oct. 13, and completed ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie County Executive Brenton Davis is facing questions for using a program that allowed inmates to clear snow and repair a veteran’s home during a severe November snowstorm last year. District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz said the program must follow proper legal procedures—and that any sentence change must include victims’ input while protecting public safety.  YourErie.com

  • District 10 football will feature five key games this weekend as teams including McLane, Oil City, Wilmington, and Girard face important playoff implications.
