  • Erie is bracing for a heat wave next week with temperatures expected to hit the 90s that could put the homeless at risk. Local groups such as Erie City Mission and Community of Caring will provide relief by extending air-conditioned hours and distributing water—helping vulnerable residents beat the heat.  YourErie.com
  • Erie is set to host CelebrateErie festival August 15 through 17 with headliners including Russell Dickerson, Gym Class Heroes, Bob — a take on Bob Dylan — and Erie All Stars paying tribute to the Beatles.   • Biologists investigating a surviving group of shallow-water ciscoes in a private lake in northeastern Pa are evaluating if the fish—native to Lake Erie until the mid-20th century—can help restore the lake trout's main food source as state and federal partners study its potential role in reviving the lake’s ecosystem.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie City Council approved using $1,097,563 from ARP interest funds for roof repairs at the city-owned Miller Bros. property after a roof collapsed during the November 2024 snowstorm—officials plan to transform the 3.76-acre site into a public safety and public works complex to replace the aging Marsh Street facility. The project may also seek up to $15 million in state funding as the work moves forward.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie County Executive Brenton Davis announced that a new ambulance will soon serve Fairview Township residents, funded by $170,000 in gaming funds as part of a $2 million effort to improve emergency response times. The ambulance was acquired from the Lake Shore Fire Department and will be operated by West County Paramedic Association & is expected to arrive sooner than the usual 18 to 24 months for a new vehicle.  YourErie.com
  • Preliminary work to build a curved pedestrian bridge over Bayfront Parkway will begin June 23, and a section of East Front Street near Holland Street will be closed for about four weeks to relocate utilities. Future plans include converting State Street into a bridge and installing a dual lane roundabout, while PennDOT considers a lengthy Bayfront Parkway closure to expedite construction & save costs.  The Erie Times-News
