COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The nonprofit Times Old Newsies announced that locals aged 25 and up can join by paying a $20 annual membership fee — the group welcomes new members even if they never carried papers and will hold events including a summer picnic, a November campaign kickoff meeting and a December meeting with dinner after its collection drive. These events offer members a chance to connect and celebrate the group’s 86-year history.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Low water levels and high winds on Lake Erie revealed an old shipwreck near Kingsville—offering a rare look at local maritime history.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The city of Erie has updated its curbside recycling rules for the holiday season so residents can put paper, cardboard, metal cans and plastic bottles of type 1 and type 2 in clear plastic bags or blue bins while larger boxes must be broken down — items like plastic bags, Styrofoam, and contaminated materials need to be taken to private recycling centers or hazardous waste events when available.  The Erie Times-News

  • Erie state Rep. Bob Merski introduced a bill to map suitable lease areas in Lake Erie for offshore wind projects as researchers study the potential for Great Lakes wind energy to triple current output—engineers face challenges from freshwater ice and supply chain limits. The bill aims to help states plan for a cleaner power future while navigating legal and economic hurdles.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health gaps in Erie leave some residents living 10 years less than others. MHEDS opened a new site on Parade Street, hired eight new providers, and will launch a mobile unit to bring care to underserved areas—efforts aimed at boosting health equity.  The Erie Times-News

  • District 10 high school girls wrestlers are set to compete this winter, with 40 athletes—many seasoned from past PIAA meets—aiming to strengthen their records in upcoming district competitions.
