COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Erie community gathered Saturday evening at the Gio Strong benefit to support 10-year-old Giovanni—known as Gio—who returned home from the cardiac care unit after multiple surgeries for a heart defect; the event featured raffle prizes, food, and music to help with his medical expenses.  YourErie.com
  • On Friday night, Erie Insurance Arena hosted a pre-game ceremony where the Erie Otters and Barrie Colts joined to honor childhood grief. The Otters partnered with Highmark Caring Place for the fourth year while the Colts held their first Grief Awareness Night on November 1—showing support for grieving children.  YourErie.com
  • On November 22, more than 600 people plunged into Lake Erie at Beach 7 in Presque Isle State Park to raise funds for Special Olympics Pennsylvania and programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The event raised over $109,000—supporting local efforts for those in need.  The Erie Times-News
  • State law enforcement and the Marine Corps partnered at a community toy drive on Saturday at the Summit Township Walmart—where volunteers filled a patrol car with toys—to help children have gifts for the holidays. More events will be held on December 5 at Perry Square and at Millcreek Mall as well as on December 12.  YourErie.com
  • Erie residents shared thanks for family and support from neighbors ahead of Thanksgiving, with one writer crediting the Sisters of Mercy for making their apartment building a caring home & strengthening the local community. The Sight Center also mourned former leader Tyco Swick, who led programs for 46 years and helped bring vision services to those in need.  The Erie Times-News
