COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie's most vulnerable residents were hurt by SNAP cuts from the government shutdown—with an estimated 48,000 county residents affected and local food pantries struggling to meet record demand. Community groups organized free harvest dinners and Pay What You Can farm stands while legal decisions on benefit restoration remain pending.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie and Millcreek will honor local veterans and serving military next spring with banners that measure 24 x 48 inches and will be posted along State Street and West Eighth Street from Memorial Day to Veterans Day—banners cost $95 on a first-come, first-served basis. The county veterans services office, the city, Millcreek Township and the Kiwanis Club teamed up to create a project that will display each honoree's name, branch of service, dates and photo for two years.  The Erie Times-News
  • EUMA will open its seasonal overflow shelter Our Neighbors’ Place at the Community Resilience Center on East 16th Street on November 26 and seeks local volunteers to help with showers, registration, and health screenings for guests as temperatures drop—donations of sweat clothes and cold-rated sleeping bags are also requested. The shelter will operate until March 31 while a temporary warming center by Erie City Mission provides immediate relief.  YourErie.com
  • Pennsylvania State Police Troop E and the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program will host the 10th Annual Stuff the Cruiser event on Saturday, November 22, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Summit Township Walmart, 1825 Downs Drive, Erie—donors will provide new, unwrapped toys to bring joy to local children while costumed superheroes and Santa Claus add festive spirit.  TalkErie.com

  • Stephen Stanbro of Bro Man's Sammiches earned national recognition when Mashed named his Erie restaurant at 8228 Peach St—located in a Gulf gas station—as one of Pennsylvania's 10 best hole-in-the-wall restaurants. He said he was honored and humbled and hinted at another announcement coming before the end of the year.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home hosted a celebration on November 10 to mark 250 years of Marine Corps service—veterans enjoyed a presentation that recalled the Corps’ founding in 1775 and honored their long-standing commitment. The event featured insights from volunteer coordinator Ken Vybiral and Colonel Nathan Packard, who reflected on their shared history.  YourErie.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices are rising in western PA as the average reaches $3.37 per gallon—7 cents higher than last week and 30 cents above the national average—due to planned refinery maintenance beginning in California. In Erie, prices are at $3.36 and are expected to remain steady through Thanksgiving.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elk Valley Elementary School in Lake City held its annual Veterans Day assembly — students sang and gave recognition to veterans for their service. The event honored military contributions and brought attention to local history.  The Erie Times-News
  • Students at Waterford Elementary School honored veterans with a Field of Flags event on their school playground on Nov 11, where fourth and fifth graders organized a ceremony that showcased sold flags with dedication cards and original poems. They raised $3,000 to donate to the Fort LeBoeuf American Legion, and teacher Ali Coletta said the turnout was wonderful despite the weather.  YourErie.com

  • Erie native and nationally-renowned talk show host Steve Scully returned on November 7 to discuss the Jefferson Educational Society’s Global Summit and share his views on the mood in DC and recent media issues—his discussion with Joel Natalie brought his insights to a broad audience.  TalkErie.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fairview boys soccer beat Deer Lakes 3-1 on November 11 to reach their first PIAA final in program history with early goals by sophomore Eli Iszkula and a later goal by Danny Lindenberger at Helling Stadium—setting up a face-off against Lewisburg in the Class 2A final on November 14 at Northeastern High School.  The Erie Times-News
  • Maplewood girls volleyball won in the PIAA Class 1A semifinals as player interviews highlighted their strong teamwork during the contest.  The Erie Times-News
