COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie City Council and Mayor Schember dedicated the 1000 block of West 30th Street as Carter Starocci 5X Way on November 6 to honor local wrestling champion Carter Starocci, the first five-time NCAA Division I champion at Penn State. The renaming was approved on May 7 (sponsored by Councilman Chuck Nelson) and celebrates Starocci’s Erie roots and his historic achievements.  The Erie Times-News
  • On Friday evening, November 7th, local veterans received nearly 500 free dinners at the American Legion Carl Neff Post 571 buffet in Wesleyville to honor their service. ROTC members helped run the event while students from Mother Theresa Academy handed veterans handwritten thank-you letters.  YourErie.com
  • The Erie sign at Bayview Park is missing a letter after it was removed on Nov 7 for a loose bolt repair; the popular photo spot will have the sign recoated and the letter reinstalled once the work is complete (officially confirmed by Gretchen Kerr of Our West Bayfront).  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Erie-based cover band First to Eleven surpassed 2 million YouTube subscribers on Oct. 16 and is now on a 10-city tour as the opening acoustic act for Boyce Avenue—local fans will see a 30-minute show when the band returns to Erie around Nov. 13. The band gained its milestone with a late-night fan watch party and continues to grow its global following.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The FAA issued an emergency order restricting operations at 40 airports and this affects Erie International Airport flights to Tampa, Orlando and Charlotte. Airlines will cut flights by 4% starting November 7 and by 10% on November 14 while airport director Derek Martin said there have been no service disruptions and urged travelers to check their travel apps for updates.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The YMCA of Greater Erie partnered with Sarah Reed to host a senior health fair on Friday—over 60 vendors offered health services and raffles—and more than 200 seniors attended the event.  YourErie.com
  • Erie County health inspectors reviewed restaurants from Oct. 29 to Nov. 6 and found six critical food safety violations at several locations including O’Charley’s and Underdog BBQ. Officials noted issues such as inadequate food temperature controls and missing HACCP plans—details that may result in future action.  The Erie Times-News

  • Several local restaurants announced that veterans will receive free or discounted meals for Veterans Day on November 11—offers include free meal vouchers at Texas Roadhouse from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and specials at Primanti Bros, Dunkin, IHOP, and more.  YourErie.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Erie honored local wrestling champion Carter Starocci by renaming the 1000 block of West 30th Street to 'Carter Starocci 5X Way'—recognizing his five NCAA Division One Wrestling Championships—and he received the key to the city from Mayor Joe Schember. City Councilman Chuck Nelson sponsored the dedication, celebrating Starocci's roots and inspiring future athletes.  YourErie.com
