EDUCATION NEWS

  • Working artist Ainsley Kissell provided ceramics tips to ECAT Teen Program students on Oct. 23 at the Erie Center for Arts and Technology (650 East Avenue), offering hands-on instruction in ceramic techniques.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie Public Schools launched the Aspiring Educators program, a two year course to prepare future elementary and secondary teachers by having students create their own classroom setup and learn skills such as classroom management and child development. A $250,000 grant through the Pennsylvania State Education Association partially funded the program—students at Collegiate Academy shared their excitement for the hands-on training.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A government shutdown has stopped November SNAP benefits for nearly two million Pennsylvanians, including over 54,000 in Erie County—state officials said they will work to give out benefits when the government reopens while local food banks prepare to help those facing food shortages as the holidays near.  YourErie.com
  • Candidate interviews with Erie City Mayor hopefuls Daria Devlin (D) and Matthew Thomas (R) aired on the Joel Natalie Show on TalkErie.com on October 24 and 27, offering voters a look at the candidates in alphabetical order. The profiles were part of the coverage for the 2025 Municipal General Election.  TalkErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • On the weekend, thirty-six LECOM dental students traveled to Pittsburgh to offer free dental care at the Mission of Mercy event, where they performed over 9,000 procedures for more than 2,000 patients who could not afford treatment.  YourErie.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Zumper data shows that median rent in Erie dropped slightly to $1,070 in September from last year's $1,100—one-bedroom apartments stayed at $850 while two-bedrooms edged up to $1,150. Overall, Erie rental prices remain significantly lower than both state and national medians.  The Erie Times-News

  • Erie Times-News is running the final Athlete of the Week polls for October with ballots open from Monday (5 p.m.) to Wednesday (5 p.m.). Fans may email suggestions with the athlete's name and key details of their achievements during that week.  The Erie Times-News
  • Fans in Erie can vote to choose the District 10 high school football Week 10 top performer until Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. — the poll is hosted by Seaway Window and Allegheny Health Network and highlights players who shone in regular season games.  The Erie Times-News
  • Harbor Creek boys soccer defeated Cathedral Prep by a score of 3-1 in the D-10 semifinal at Fairview on Oct. 27, which secured their berth in the PIAA tournament - Thanos Valasis and Quinn Brewer gave interviews about the win.  The Erie Times-News
  • Last week’s heavy rain improved steelhead fishing along Erie creeks. At Trout Run at Avonia Beach, dozens of steelhead began swimming upstream—while the Fish and Boat Commission prepares to collect them for breeding.  YourErie.com
