- ➤ Former Millcreek Township School District superintendent Ian Roberts was indicted in Iowa on charges of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and illegally possessing four firearms— the Millcreek School Board is urging federal prosecutors to seek similar charges in Erie as his arraignment is set for today. - ➤ VisitErie released summer 2025 data from Memorial Day to Labor Day that shows more visitors came but spent less money. CEO John Oliver said that 31% of county retail sales came from visitors over 50 miles away and that top spots include Presque Isle State Park, the bayfront, the Route 6 corridor, and upper Peach Street — his remarks follow a national trend after the pandemic. - ➤ The Erie VA Medical Center is expanding and will close its main entrance at the start of next year, so it is seeking seven volunteer shuttle drivers to help veterans reach the new entrances safely. Volunteers, who are not required to be veterans, must pass physical, fingerprint, and driver’s license background checks before starting around 7:30 a.m.—the center wants to avoid long walks during the construction phase. - ➤ The DEA is hosting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 25 at several Erie locations (City of Erie Municipal Building, Hamot Hospital, and Millcreek Township Police Department) to help residents safely dispose of unused prescription medications and prevent substance misuse. - ➤ In District 10 boys soccer playoffs, Harbor Creek edged North East 2-1 while Fairview beat Fort LeBoeuf 6-1, and Slippery Rock advanced with a 4-2 win over Hickory. - ➤ Fairview’s Anthony LaBoda posted a record low 65 in the second round of the PIAA 2A boys golf tournament on Oct. 21, with eagle threes on par-five holes that helped him finish as runner-up to Cole Powell’s winning total. - ➤ Former Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer tied the NHL record for the longest points streak by a defenseman at the start of his New York Islanders career by recording a point in every game over six matches, including a game-winning goal in a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 21—he could extend his streak further when the Islanders host the Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 23.
