  • Inter-Church Ministries is running the Coats for Kids drive to collect winter coats for Erie children before the cold sets in. The drive aims to gather 800 coats with drop-offs at local sites like Patterson School of Ballet+HQ Hair Salon+Gannon University, and families needing help may call 814-454-2411.  YourErie.com
  • More than 150 Erie Community's Choice Awards winners were announced at the Bayfront Convention Center on Oct 10—highlighting local businesses and services chosen by community votes.   • The YMCA of Greater Erie will host its Family Fit Fun Day today at Camp Sherwin on West Lake Road in Lake City from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering dental health lessons by UPMC and fun activities like fitness exercises, an engineering workshop with Wabtec, therapy dog visits, and balloon animals by Magic Steve — all free to the public.  YourErie.com
  • SafeNet Erie is facing reduced funds because state lawmakers did not pass a budget by June 30th, leaving more than 18,000 domestic violence victims at risk of losing support services. The organization will host Boo Bingo on October 12th from 3 PM to 7 PM at MP Coney Island (Sterrettania Road) to raise funds during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  YourErie.com
  • Erie Zoo confirmed that spot-nosed guenon monkey Georgia gave birth to her first baby on October 8—both the mother and baby are healthy, and father Nemo is eager to help care for his new family. Zoo keepers will monitor the baby before giving it a name.  YourErie.com
  • Erie County Veterans Memorial Park on State Street finished its Big Walkway project yesterday with renovations paid for by an Erie County grant that connects all memorials so visitors can honor local veterans—Bill Welch said the board faced permitting delays and will add security cameras and benches soon.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • On October 10, ANNA Shelter announced that Autumn—an emaciated dog found at Frontier Park on October 6—died despite care, and its cruelty team is working with Erie Police to prosecute the individual accused of abandoning her.  YourErie.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Erie Bird Observatory is inviting volunteers to join the Presque Isle Big Sit—held today at Fry's Landing—as part of World Migratory Bird Day to count bird species within a circle 17 feet across. The event runs from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will offer educational materials on bird migration.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Ingrid Renberg opened Relaxapy at 1101 Peninsula Drive in Millcreek Township where a new salt cave built by a team from Poland lets people try salt therapy to ease breathing and stress. The center offers 25-minute sessions for $20 and 45-minute sessions for $40, and one local user said she needed less oxygen after a visit — the treatment is not covered by insurance.  The Erie Times-News
  • LECOM took ownership of Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge and its community living center after an 18‑month process and has operated the facility since Oct. 1—its president said the institute will maintain the Sisters of St. Joseph’s mission by keeping residents’ care unchanged.  YourErie.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from Realtor.com showed that home prices in Erie County rose in July. The median price went up to $215,000 — a 7% increase from June and 10.3% higher than last July — while sales of single-family homes and condos also grew.  The Erie Times-News

  • On Oct. 9, Hickory beat Grove City 21-14 and Lakeview won 46-41 over Cochranton in District 10 high school football games—seventeen games on Oct. 10 were updated live by reporters at key matchups to provide scores and highlights.  The Erie Times-News
  • General McLane’s football team clinched the championship of District 10’s Region 6 with a 49 to 20 win at Meadville’s Bender Field on Oct. 10—four key plays boosted their record and made them the top seed for the Class 4A playoffs. Coach Marshall McCormick led the Lancers to a 7 to 1 record while Meadville dropped to a 1 to 2 record.  The Erie Times-News
  • Fort LeBoeuf clinched a share of the Region 5 football title by beating Harbor Creek 35-29 at Carm Bonito Field on Oct. 10—Skyler Sadowski’s 30-yard run and key touchdowns helped the Bison hold a tight lead despite Harbor Creek’s efforts.  The Erie Times-News
