COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PIAA named Cathedral Prep’s Therese Brown and Corry volleyball’s Kelly Goodsel as coaches of the year while Goodsel’s team hosts Avery’s Pawsitive Change charity drive today at its home match at 7 p.m. — fans are asked to wear black and bring a pet food or treat donation to support Avery Chauncey’s fight against cancer; the gym doors open at 5:30 with junior varsity beginning at 6.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday morning a walker in Frontier Park found a starving and emaciated dog and called Erie police who alerted ANNA Shelter which rescued the dog—named Autumn—now receiving urgent care while investigators seek clues on her abandonment.  YourErie.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Drought Task Force announced that 25 counties including Erie are under a drought watch due to low summer rain—residents are encouraged to reduce water use by 5 to 10 percent. DEP said more rain than a brief thunderstorm will be needed to lift the status as it continues to monitor stream flows, groundwater, and soil moisture.  TalkErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Following in the footsteps of Tom Ridge, Gov. Josh Shapiro was elected as chair of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers group during a summit held from Oct. 4 to Oct. 6 in Quebec City—he will host the next summit in Erie in 2027.  The Erie Times-News

  • Seniors at Springhill Senior Living enjoyed rock climbing to celebrate Active Aging Week as part of a partnership with ASCEND Erie — the activity continues through October 12 and is meant to help them stay active and independent.  YourErie.com

  • Addie Bowers, a cancer survivor and new mother, tossed the ceremonial first pitch at an Erie SeaWolves game—her gynecological oncologist Dr. Alison Garrett watched—and the fans cheered—showing strong community support—.  The Erie Times-News
  • Former Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer, the first overall NHL pick by the Islanders, will make his NHL debut on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena—he is 18 and recovered from a broken collarbone suffered with Team Canada in December.  The Erie Times-News
  • Cathedral Prep's tennis player Paige Patsy beat teammate Ella Fetzner on October 6th to defend the District 10 Class 2A girls singles title—her win marks a strong effort in the tournament.  The Erie Times-News
