COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Corry is hosting the Bigfoot Bash on Sept. 12 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on North Center Street as part of First Fridays events—local businesses will bring a bigfoot theme with fun features like a volunteer in a Bigfoot costume leading a paintball hunt, a 7-foot animatronic for photos, a cornhole tournament, live music and food trucks.  The Erie Times-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new Dollar General store opened on Sept. 8 at 8181 W. Avonia Road in Fairview Township and will host a grand opening on Sept. 13 where the first 50 adult customers receive $10 gift cards and the first 100 get tote bags. The store is expected to hire six to 10 people plus local nonprofits within a 15-mile radius can apply for Literacy Foundation grants.  The Erie Times-News
  • Mighty Fine Donuts changed its business hours so customers can get their favorite treats every day. The shop at 2612 Parade Street now opens on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5 am to 1 pm and from 5 am to 5 pm Wednesday through Sunday—giving Erie residents more time to enjoy their donuts.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Inner-City Neighborhood Art House celebrated its 30th anniversary with its annual Taste of the Arts event featuring live student performances and art auctions. The non-profit—overseen by the Benedictine Sisters—provides free arts lessons to Erie students and plans to continue empowering local youth.  YourErie.com
  • The annual Irish Festival will be held from Sept. 19 to Sept. 21 at St. Patrick Church at 130 E. Fourth St. The event will feature Irish food, dance, and music—along with a Leprechaun Village, vendor booths and a pub for adults.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Investors, government representatives and university officials met at Penn State Behrend’s Knowledge Center on September 9 to preview plans for the $21 million Center for Manufacturing Competitiveness project in Knowledge Park. The research facility is set to break ground in spring and take 18 months to complete—supporting students and manufacturers.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Remote Area Medical will offer free medical and dental exams in Erie on September 13 and 14. Charles (Boo) Hagerty, president of Hamot Health Foundation, said residents can attend the clinic to receive needed care.  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State commit Jerek Turlij built a wooden pitcher’s mound at North East High School in Erie to overcome seasonal weather challenges and maintain his training at Bomb Shelter Indoor Cages. He throws daily and works on his fastball (which reached 97 mph) and changeup to be ready for spring.  The Erie Times-News
  • Girard and North East high school football teams both have three wins so far under their second-year coaches. Girard won for the first time in 11 years when they beat Fairview + North East beat Harbor Creek, making each team a strong contender in District 10 Region 5.  The Erie Times-News
