COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sept. 11, 2001, 501 donors filled Erie's Community Blood Bank when the 9/11 attacks shocked the area, and every unit of blood was used for patients in northwestern Pennsylvania—David Bosko, who watched the events with his wife, returned six weeks later and donated regularly for over a decade before resuming donations recently at his church drive.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mercyhurst Theatre Program will premiere 'Spirits Off,' a new comedy set in 1950s Erie on Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and continue performances through Oct. 5 at Taylor Little Theatre — the play, co-written by Dr. Mary Barile and Dr. Brett D. Johnson, features nine Mercyhurst students and tickets start at $15 for adults.  Mercyhurst University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie County and the city of Erie will mark the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on Sept. 11 with several events — a memorial service at Blasco Library at 8:46 a.m., a Hero Days Concert Night at Liberty Park at 5 p.m., a golf tournament at Whispering Woods starting with breakfast at 7:30 a.m., and an interment ceremony at Old Almshouse Cemetery at 11 a.m.  The Erie Times-News
  • Volunteers finished a two-year gravestone restoration project at PA Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Home on East 3rd Street on Monday night to honor fallen veterans. The ceremony at 7 p.m. featured live music from North Coast Brass Company in a cemetery with over 1,300 graves.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erie will host a free medical and dental clinic on Sept. 13-14 at the Erie Center for Arts and Technology at 650 East Ave, where Remote Area Medical and Hamot Health Foundation plan to treat up to 400 patients on a first-come, first-served basis. Patients can park at East Middle School starting midnight Friday and Saturday and will get a free meal, with care provided by over 300 volunteers—most of whom are health workers.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie's Bicentennial Tower is turning purple this September to raise awareness for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month as UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Safe Harbor + the county's Suicide Prevention Advisory Board mark 988 Day, urging those in need to call or text 988 for help.  YourErie.com
