COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the final Barber Beast on the Bay race took place at Presque Isle State Park, ending a 12-year run that raised over $900,000 for the Barber National Institute—more than 1,400 participants raced a 10-mile obstacle course with 30 challenges ending at Waldameer's wave pool. The record turnout marked the largest registration in the event's history and highlighted its impact on community fundraising.  YourErie.com
  • Family, friends, and coworkers gathered on Sunday at Greengarden Lanes for a bowling benefit to honor Scott Biggie, who died from cancer nearly two weeks ago and to help pay for his family’s medical expenses. Organizers said the turnout exceeded expectations—Kristina Michelon noted Biggie was cherished by the community.  YourErie.com

  • With Labor Day behind us and schools back in session, many Erie area ice cream stands have closed for the season and will remain shut until spring 2026—some shops set final dates in September while others plan to stay open until October.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hornby School Museum will celebrate its 150th birthday on Sept. 21 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 10000 Station Road — the event will include music, games and interactive activities that showcase the restored one-room schoolhouse’s history.  The Erie Times-News

  • Barks and Brews, an off-leash dog park at Voodoo Brewing Company in Downtown Erie, opened this summer to let dog owners enjoy drinks with their pets—an end of summer celebration is planned for September 13.  YourErie.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Erie Marathon held Sept. 7, runners Nate Kawalec from Ohio and Katie Lembo from New York made their 26.2-mile debuts and won the male and female titles—Kawalec finished in 2:23:30 and Lembo in 2:51:39. The course at Presque Isle qualifies for Boston and drew many first-timers.  The Erie Times-News
