COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local groups including the Erie Otters and Port Erie Plastics held a back-to-school supply drive Tuesday at Family Services of Northwest PA to gather school supplies for foster children—collecting hundreds of items. The organizers said the supplies will be packaged and distributed to help the children start the school year.  YourErie.com
  • Builders preparing for the final Barber Beast on the Bay will set up 30 natural and manmade obstacles at Presque Isle State Park before moving to Waldameer for an adaptive course that will challenge participants this Saturday. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State police are investigating a car-pedestrian accident on Aug. 29 along Erie Street in Edinboro where a 79-year-old woman from Meadville was struck by a Cadillac SRX as she tried to cross the road at about 6:15 p.m.—she died at UPMC Hamot and the 82-year-old driver was not hurt.  The Erie Times-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, the $1.3 billion Powerball drawing has motivated more Erie residents to buy tickets at local retailers—Presque Isle Superette has seen a 25% to 30% boost in sales and owner Jeff Faulhaber noted that players now buy tickets individually instead of in groups. This jackpot is the largest since April 6 and continues to drive local interest in the lottery.  The Erie Times-News

CRIME NEWS

  • 29-year-old Patrick Gleba pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to three charges—attempted homicide, aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure—after shooting Sergeant David Stucke in the leg on the 500 block of East 22nd Street in July 2023; his sentencing will be set for October 27.  YourErie.com
  • Erie police are investigating a possible link between two shootings that sent a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his arm from a vehicle near East 26th Street and a 22-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his hands from a drive-by near East 25th and Wayne streets on Sept. 1—both victims are known to each other.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, tracing its origins to 1875 when the Sisters of St. Joseph cared for a man with a broken ankle that led to the town’s first hospital—since then, the hospital has grown with new additions and joined Allegheny Health Network in 2013. Its recent upgrades, including a new emergency department and more operating rooms, help it keep serving the community with the same care as in its early years.  The Erie Times-News
