Perry Monument, built in 1926 on Crystal Point — a tribute to Oliver Hazard Perry of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie — began its restoration with foundation work on March 31 at Presque Isle State Park.
Erie's Perry Monument at Crystal Point was chosen in 1925 after proposals for a stadium, highway park, and bayfront park were debated.
The monument, dedicated on Sept. 10 as a 100-year tribute to Oliver Hazard Perry, marks a long planning process that left Presque Isle as an after-thought.
