COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the 140th Erie County Fair in Wattsburg is underway and will run until Aug. 30—families enjoy rides, contests, and local food. The event features draft horse pulling, tractor displays, and amusement rides that bring the community together.  The Erie Times-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Erie fire marshals investigated the cause of a second fire at a vacant East Seventh Street house that was hit by a fire in June when the incident broke out at (2:34 a.m.) on Aug. 28 at (333 E. Seventh St.), damaging the second floor and attic with reports of possible squatters and no injuries reported.  The Erie Times-News

  • Goodwill Industries of Ashtabula Inc. is leasing and remodeling the former Walgreens at 4309 Buffalo Road in Harborcreek to open a new retail and donation center by Oct. 1. The nonprofit has hired 4 employees and will employ 25 in total—meeting a busy local need.  The Erie Times-News

CRIME NEWS

  • Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz said her office is reviewing investigative materials and a Pennsylvania State Police report about the shooting death of Marchello Woodard on July 2 near East 27th and German Streets—she said the outcome will be shared with his family first and then the public as the investigation continues.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Brewerie at Union Station is hosting its annual Arts & Drafts Festival that will feature local art, craft beers and live music. Organizers expect many locals to enjoy the event while local vendors showcase their offerings.  Erie Reader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Erie County Department of Health has issued 15 advisories for harmful algal blooms at local waters—especially at Presque Isle State Park—to warn pet owners that dogs can ingest more toxins and need washing after swimming.  YourErie.com
  • Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is leading local efforts to reduce cigarette butt pollution along Lake Erie — the group has set up receptacles at marinas and educates the public on proper disposal to protect local wildlife and water quality.   • Bayfront Parkway in Erie will close starting September 2 for about one year for major work on the Central Bayfront Parkway Project. Drivers are advised to use West and East Front Streets for waterfront access & follow posted detours on Route 5 and Greengarden Boulevard.  TalkErie.com

  • A Remote Area Medical pop up clinic is returning to Erie next month to offer free dental, vision and medical care—services will be provided on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14 at the Erie Center for the Arts and Technology on a first come, first served basis.  YourErie.com
  • Ben VanHook, a Mercyhurst grad and AIM program participant, is challenging negative autism stereotypes by co-authoring a report that highlights autistic strengths and reforming leadership practices at the APA’s Division 33—he now works as community support coordinator at the Organization for Autism Research and is pursuing a master’s in public policy with an education emphasis.  Mercyhurst University
