CRIME NEWS

  • Concerned residents, supporters, and family of Marchello Woodard met at Abundant Life Ministries Church to talk with the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus about his shooting death on July 2 by a state parole agent—officials were urged to review the case for accountability.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erie Public Schools teachers welcomed students back for the first day of school at McKinley Elementary School — 933 E. 22nd St., where staff ensured a warm return to class.  The Erie Times-News
  • Today, Harding Elementary welcomed students for the first day of school as kids learned the alphabet, enjoyed recess, and had a warm send-off from teachers and bus drivers. More than a dozen City of Erie schools opened today, including ten elementary, three middle, and two high schools, with families and staff looking forward to a successful year.  YourErie.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Mike Kelly toured the shuttered Erie Coke site on Aug. 21 with local and state officials and pledged to lobby for federal funding to support cleanup of the nearly 200-acre property—an effort expected to cost up to $70 million and take 10 to 20 years.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie Mayor Joe Shember dedicated the new $2.6 million Kahkwa Bridge in west Erie on Aug. 25—this bridge is expected to ease local travel.  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mercyhurst University football will start its second Division I season after a record of 4 to 7 last year—head coach Ryan Riemedio built a team of 56 new players including 20 transfers and star quarterback Adam Urena after losing key player Cameron Barmore to Arizona University. The Lakers will open on August 28 at Youngstown State and face a schedule filled exclusively with Division I opponents.  The Erie Times-News
