CRIME NEWS

  • Former Erie Coke supervisor Dave Stablein pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act, and the U.S. Attorney Office moved to dismiss his felony charges—Judge Susan Paradise Baxter questioned the unusual dismissal request during court on Aug 19.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tall Ships Erie kicked off yesterday with a Parade of Sail on Presque Isle Bay—windy conditions and temperatures in the mid 60s helped the ships race with full sails. Erie's Lettie G. Howard led along with four other tall ships as the festival continues at Dobbins Landing with more vessels on display.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nicole Whaling, a former labor and delivery nurse at UPMC Hamot, now works as a school nurse in Millcreek Township School District, caring for over 50 middle-school students each day by giving medicine and emotional support—she helps manage chronic illnesses and stress while coordinating with parents and local health officials on immunizations. Her shift starts before school and ends when the bell rings, ensuring students are safe and ready to learn.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 23, the Benedictine Sisters of Erie will host the third annual Glinodo Goat Fest at their Glinodo property on East Lake Road where goats help clear invasive plants on a Harborcreek Township site. Families will enjoy a storybook trail, nature art, snacks and brief presentations at 1:30 and 3 p.m. — the festival shows a natural way to care for the Earth.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie City Council gave preliminary approval for a bond of up to $52 million to fund a new public safety and public works complex at the former Miller Bros. site—financing that will replace the aging Marsh Street facility with a final vote scheduled for Sept. 3 after a study session on Sept. 2.  The Erie Times-News
  • Interstate 79 lanes in Erie will close from Aug. 26 through Aug. 29 and again from Sept. 3-5 for bridge inspections that come before repair work starting next year and lasting through 2027. Flaggers may direct traffic while about 10,000 vehicles use the 1983-built bridges — two lanes will stay open in each direction during the repairs.  The Erie Times-News

  • The Food and Drug Administration said on August 19 that Walmart is recalling Great Value frozen raw shrimp after tests found radioactive Cesium-137 in samples from four ports including Miami — consumers in Pennsylvania and 12 other states should throw away any product matching the lot codes before eating.  The Erie Times-News

  • Tickets for the 2025 CCA Women’s D2 Tip-Off Classic, presented by AHN Sports Medicine and AHN Pavilion, will be available online starting Sept. 2 for an eight-team basketball tournament that will take place Nov. 7-9 at Gannon University and PennWest Edinboro. Daily general admission is $15 while discounted tickets are $10 and reserved tickets are $20 — free entry is offered for current Edinboro and Gannon students.  TalkErie.com
