  • On Thursday, the Community of Caring honored its founder Mother Mary Beth Kennedy on what would have been her 99th birthday as family, friends and local officials gathered on East 8th Street and declared August as Human Kindness Month in Pennsylvania (continuing her legacy in Erie and Africa).  YourErie.com

  • Save A Lot reacquired two Erie grocery stores that reopened on August 13 after operating as Value Food Stores due to improper rebranding by an independent licensee. The stores (2026 Broad St. and 2209 W. 12th St.) now show new signs and special deals as the chain works to meet its high operational standards.  The Erie Times-News

CRIME NEWS

  • The Diocese of Erie said it will try to refund tickets from a Corvette raffle fundraiser at St. Jude Parish and placed Father Ross Miceli—on administrative leave—as part of its internal financial audit. The parish hired an independent forensic auditor and will sell the fundraiser car back to the dealer as the Erie County District Attorney’s investigation continues.  YourErie.com
  • Erie police arrested Ronald Ryen, a 58-year-old man, after he vandalized Trawka’s Market on Payne Avenue on Aug. 11 with a helium tank and resisted arrest—he was tased and now faces multiple charges including criminal mischief and resisting arrest while held on a $15,000 bond.  The Erie Times-News

  • Port Farms is launching its Blooms, Bubbles and Butterflies festival today through August 17 with a butterfly garden, bubble dance parties, flower picking and a chance to meet Princesses Ariel and Moana. The event returns from August 22 to 24 — tickets range from $12.31 to $68.90 and access more than 20 farm attractions.  The Erie Times-News
  • Slippery Rock University and the Erie Yacht Club held a floating art show last Thursday evening near Presque Isle Bay where art students painted sails that women from the yacht club’s Women on the Water program sailed—official plans for an auction of the sails have not yet been set.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Erie mother Megan Kuhn, who delivered her son, Asher four weeks ago at Magee-Womens UPMC Hospital, said she struggled with breastfeeding and received help from lactation consultants. She now encourages other moms to feel supported when feeding in public—sharing her experience during National Breastfeeding Awareness Month.  YourErie.com
  • Erie's two largest hospitals honored 814 Day by dressing newborns in special onesies that display the area's main code. Saint Vincent showed twin newborns while UPMC Hamot dressed newborn Brooks Ohl on Aug. 14—marking the celebration in northwestern Pennsylvania.  The Erie Times-News
