- ➤ General McLane alumni gathered over the weekend of August 8 to revive a local tradition by restoring a barn near their old high school — the barn will again serve as a place where graduating classes paint their year. The Class of 1984 raised the most funds for the project — many former students and their families reunited to honor their shared past. YourErie.com
- ➤ Erie Gives, hosted by the Erie Community Foundation, is a 24-hour fundraiser on Aug. 12 that will benefit more than 450 local nonprofits+ Donors can contribute by phone, online, or by check, and a bonus match will cover fees so every cent goes directly to the groups. The Erie Times-News

- ➤ Gem City Shipbuilding is a proposed project to transform the former Erie Coke site into a naval ship production hub. The 160-acre parcel provides water access + rail connectivity and will need $25 million to $75 million for cleanup and engineering to bring jobs and support national defense. The Erie Times-News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Union City Area High School marching band replaced its overused drumline with new drums funded by sponsorships, donations and student fundraising; the drums were purchased in January from Volkwein’s Music and delivered in May. Director Ryan Fulton said the new equipment, first used at North East Firemen's Cherry Festival in July, gives students a clearer sound and he plans further gear upgrades in the future — showing the community's strong support for local education. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Erie County Department of Health inspectors checked restaurants from July 31 — Aug. 6 and found a critical violation at The Jazz House, where the manager lacked proper food safety knowledge, and a noncritical violation at Isle House showing signs of rodent and insect activity, while earlier issues at Goodtimez and Quick Stop 2 were corrected.
