  • 1.2 million sunflowers now bloom on 50 acres near the Battles Yellow House on Walnut Street in Girard after being planted in May by the Hagen History Center and The Wilds Sonshine Factory. In the fall, the field will be harvested to produce spirits—yielding an estimated 300 to 400 bottles per acre for local sale.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Millcreek Township said that at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, 39-year-old Jafar Almaarej from Dearborn is accused of taking his daughter (7-year-old) from her home while her mother was at work, and he was last seen driving a black Jeep Wrangler (Michigan plate 050G994) as he fled toward Michigan.  YourErie.com
  • Over a month ago, a state parole officer fatally shot local resident Marchello Woodard and although the Erie County District Attorney’s Office is investigating, his family has not heard any updates and continues to demand justice—calling for clear communication from officials.  YourErie.com

  • St. Paul’s Italian Festival will take place from Aug 8 to 10 at 1617 Walnut St in Erie, offering classic Italian dishes like chicken parmesan and pasta e fagioli while Italian Dancers of Erie perform at fixed times; the festival also honors longtime contributor Ronald DiVecchio—Chairman for Life.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie City Council will review an ordinance at a 9 a.m. meeting on Aug. 6 that would broaden a government study to include options beyond home rule—potentially delaying the voter referendum until May 19. If approved, a nine-member commission will study different forms of government—providing recommendations for future changes in Erie.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monday morning, LECOM Health and local government officials broke ground on the new Colonial Family Pharmacy on Wattsburg Road in Greene Township—this site will offer retail pharmaceuticals, prescriptions, immunizations and a small retail store to help local residents. Greene Township supervisor Tracey Fugagli said the new pharmacy will be a great asset to the community—especially as other chains have closed.  YourErie.com
  • Erie County began construction yesterday on a new health care training hub at Erie County Community College to train students in nursing, digital medical sonograph and patient care technician skills with courses scheduled to start in fall. The $5.2 million project uses $2 million from American Rescue Plan funds & contributions from local health systems to boost work opportunities in the region.  The Erie Times-News
