Good morning, Erie. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 1st of August.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership has named the honorees for Spirit of Erie, a new event that will replace two long-running awards programs and honor key community leaders. The event will be held on September 24 from 5:15 to 9:15 p.m. at Bayfront Convention Center — tickets are $100 for members and $130 for non-members — and will feature a pre-reception, seated dinner program, and post-event celebration — a night for Erie’s local pride. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Buffalo man, 37-year-old Daniel Negron, was arrested at St. Peter Cathedral during a 5:15 p.m. mass after he allegedly wielded a knife and fled, and he now faces a second-degree murder charge for killing his girlfriend near Buffalo — he is held at Erie County Prison pending extradition. - ➤ A vigil was held on July 30 at the intersection of East 27th and German streets to honor Marchello D. Woodard, a 43-year-old Erie resident fatally shot by a state parole officer on July 2, as religious groups led prayer, song and calls for nonviolence amid demands for swift justice. The Erie Times-News
- ➤ Today, Mayor Joe Schember and Police Chief Dan Spizarny announced that violent crime in Erie dropped in the first half of 2025 — five people were shot and 31 shots fired compared to higher counts in previous years — while ten-year statistics from 2014 to 2024 show steady declines aided by Shot Spotter technology. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Erie will host a series of entertainment events in August and September that feature art, comedy, music and theater at various local venues. Online listings on GoErie.com include events such as an art reception at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery (Aug. 1 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and a comedy show at Kellar’s (Aug. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m.) with ticket prices that range from free to over $100. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Erie police may soon lose the ShotSpotter program as its $900,000 federal grant funding ends, leaving officials worried that fewer citizens will report gunfire. The tool, installed two years ago and covering a quarter of the city, has detected 178 confirmed gunfire incidents—helping police locate five shooting victims and secure six arrests. YourErie.com
- ➤ The City of Erie has begun using a new sensor system that checks road and sign conditions with sensors on 16 city vehicles—this system was funded by a $51,000 DCED grant and will help decide paving priorities as work starts on the east side on August 6 and moves to the west side later in the season.
