Good morning, Erie. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday morning, the SONS of Lake Erie hosted a free fishing trip for veterans who served our nation, offering a chance for camaraderie on the water. Program director Chuck Miller said the group caught 34 walleye and that the organization will soon plan a similar trip for female veterans — a further effort to honor their service.  YourErie.com
  • Erie Blues and Jazz Festival returns to Frontier Park this weekend and seeks volunteers to help with setup, parking and cleaning—organizers need 60 volunteers and have reached about half their goal. The festival is a long-time tradition that will offer free music performances by local, regional and national acts.  YourErie.com
  • Tall Ships Erie will light up the bayfront from August 21st to 24th with a festival expecting tens of thousands of visitors and 300 volunteers needed to help with tasks such as ticket selling and serving drinks (community pride is on the line). President Billy Sabatini said volunteers will earn free tickets, a t-shirt, and a front row view of the water action.  YourErie.com
  • Wegmans employees volunteered at Erie High School on Tuesday for the annual Day of Caring project, cleaning classrooms, organizing supplies, and sprucing up hallways in partnership with United Way — a plan designed to create a better school environment. Store manager Liz Lingenfelter praised the volunteers’ work — noting it made a clear impact on the community.  YourErie.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State police are investigating the fatal hit-and-run on Route 19 in Waterford Township on July 19 that killed 33-year-old Justin Puckly and are reviewing surveillance video while asking anyone with information (call 814-898-1641) if they saw a vehicle near a roundabout between (12:55 a.m. and 1:10 a.m.) that night.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ray, a Pennsylvania DEP summer intern, spotted a rare freshwater jellyfish at Presque Isle State Park while working at the Presque Isle Marina docks. The USGS reports this species, Craspedacusta sowerbyi, had only been seen once in Erie County (in 1999 at Fairview Township).  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The PFBC approved three measures on July 28 to improve fishing and boating in Erie. It purchased 7.52 acres along Elk Creek for $170,000 to add angler parking, sold a 17-acre marina for $1 while keeping launch area rights, and now limits Walnut Creek fishing to daylight—addressing local complaints.  The Erie Times-News
