  • Erie Zoo is facing a financial crisis that threatens its centennial operations as city leaders and stakeholders discuss solutions to save it. A city council resolution passed three weeks ago plus an ownership transfer remains pending, leaving the zoo’s future uncertain.  YourErie.com
  • More than 140 golfers took part in the 12th annual Patrick J. DiPaolo Memorial Golf Classic at Lakeshore Country Club on July 25th, raising funds for a memorial scholarship fund that benefits local student-athletes. CRIME NEWS

  • An Erie man—27-year-old Djimon Johnson—was sentenced on July 24 to 72 months in prison plus four years of supervised release after a 2021 drug raid found him with over 380 grams of fentanyl, two stolen pistols, and a 50-round drum magazine while he also faced charges for a parole violation.  YourErie.com

  • The Presque Isle Lighthouse at Presque Isle State Park has been under renovation to show its original design and now includes a welcome center—Erie residents can also visit the Erie Land Lighthouse, which offers tower tours for views of Lake Erie. The North Pier Light, photographed on July 23, is located at the end of the pier near the Coast Guard Station and is now cared for by the Presque Isle Light Station.  The Erie Times-News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Erie Downtown Development Corporation began construction on Flagship City Commons by moving dirt for the foundation of a $25 million, 40,000 square foot building — combining office and commercial space between North Park Row and West 5th Street. CEO Drew Whiting said the project will be completed in phases with the building opening by the first quarter of 2027.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie city leaders, including Mayor Joe Schember, sent letters to Governor Josh Shapiro, PSP Captain Dale Brown, and District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz after a PA parole officer fatally shot Marchello Woodard, and they demanded weekly updates on the investigation—officials say more transparency is needed to address community concerns.  YourErie.com

  • A blood drive honoring Rachel Clark—an Erie woman battling a rare soft tissue cancer—was extended after Thursday’s event received 80 donors, four times the expected turnout. Her father organized both drives at Hume’s Chrysler Jeep Dodge and RAM in Waterford to help keep her alive.  YourErie.com
  • UPMC & GoHealth opened two new urgent care centers at 5039 & 7200 Peach Street in Erie County on July 25, offering walk-in care every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Their integrated electronic health records system will help coordinate treatment for non-emergency conditions.  YourErie.com
