COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie Ale Works was recognized by The Keystone as one of Pennsylvania’s most charitable breweries—ranking fourth out of eight for its community support efforts. The local brewery donates 10% of its Thursday sales to charity through its weekly Benevolent Beers event.  YourErie.com
  • The Robert Irvine Foundation will host a free family event on August 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Mellon Heritage Veterans Outreach Center for veterans, active duty military, and their families — the event will offer resource booths, suicide prevention training, children’s activities, and a free lunch with support from partners such as Blue Cross Blue Shield and PA Veteran Trust Fund.  TalkErie.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An electrical power line fire started at 7:30 a.m. on July 24 in downtown Erie near Gannon University's I-HACK building and forced the evacuation of about five people while briefly cutting power to traffic signals and 570 Penelec customers—including city hall—before crews restored service.  The Erie Times-News
  • A fire broke out late Wednesday night in a vacant house at the corner of East 19th and Reed in Erie and caused severe damage that is prompting city officials to plan its demolition soon—firefighters reported no injuries.  YourErie.com

  • The Erie Blues & Jazz Fest is scheduled to take place at Frontier Park and will feature local blues and jazz performers — giving Erie residents an opportunity to enjoy live music in a community setting.  Erie Reader

  • Campers from Barber National Institute’s Camp Shamrock took the stage on Thursday for a talent show—about 20 campers performed—while the institute’s Expanding Social Opportunities program held its own talent show today.  YourErie.com

  • The Erie Zoo faces closure as a letter from the Erie County Convention Center Authority warned city officials about its dire funding and urged a response to a proposal to transfer 106 acres for its operation. City solicitor Ed Betza is preparing a proposal to be presented next week—officials and zoo representatives are working on a plan to save the zoo.  YourErie.com
  • Erie spent $94,000 to upgrade the playground at Joseph Walczak Park, and the mayor along with the parks department officially opened the new equipment on July 24. The project is part of a plan spanning 20 years to revitalize local parks — citizens will soon share their input at CelebrateErie.  YourErie.com
  • Tom Maggio, AICP, of the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority has been named one of 60 civic leaders nationwide for the Lincoln Institute’s Vibrant Communities Fellows Program—an intensive six-month initiative to boost leadership skills and planning tools for local challenges.
