  • PA Careerlink hosted Hire a Veteran Day at the VFW post on West 26th Street yesterday where local veterans met more than 20 employers and received resume and interview tips—organizer Letty Acosta noted the event doubled veteran job placements and plans to grow next year.  YourErie.com
  • Asbury Woods held a free Fish Field Day on August 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Andrew J. Conner Nature Center—experts from Trout Unlimited and the PA Fish and Boat Commission led fly fishing, invasive species, and water quality demos—giving Erie families a hands-on learning day.  TalkErie.com

  • Today, First Student Bus Company hosted an event at McDowell High School where interested adults could test drive a school bus under the guidance of an experienced driver (participants needed a clean driver’s license and closed toe shoes). Christina Stephens from Millcreek Township and others joined the event as the company said it will offer CDL training before the new school year begins.  YourErie.com

  • Tickets for the holiday shows Cirque Dreams Holidaze and Mannheim Steamroller Christmas at the Warner Theatre go on sale July 25 at 10 a.m. at the Erie Insurance Arena box office, the Broadway in Erie website & by phone. Cirque Dreams Holidaze will run on November 25 at 7:30 p.m. while Mannheim Steamroller Christmas is scheduled for December 2 at 7:30 p.m. with ticket prices set at $53, $65, and $77.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A PennEnvironment report found high bacteria levels at Presque Isle beaches after tests in 2024 showed dangerous pollution that led to closures and health warnings. The study linked the contamination to outdated sewer systems & runoff pollution and urged investments to protect visitors from illnesses like nausea, diarrhea, and ear infections.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state’s 9-1-1 system had an outage earlier this month from an operating system defect that caused intermittent disruptions to Next Generation 911 call delivery, and PEMA activated the emergency alert system to warn Erie residents while ruling out a cyberattack. PEMA recommended saving the county’s non-emergency number (814-451-7920) for future calls.  YourErie.com

  • Health officials in Erie confirmed that three mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus today, and they are monitoring the situation closely.  YourErie.com
