COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Diverse Erie announced that it will award grants ranging from $100 to $250,000 to local groups with bold ideas to enhance equity and opportunity in Erie’s BIPOC community. The funding cycle previously awarded $3.5 million to 54 local nonprofits and businesses and will accept applications until August 29—reviewers will announce decisions within 60 days.  YourErie.com
  • Erie County Public Library is asking the public for input on plans to renovate Mead Children’s Library on East Front Street—this grant-supported update will refresh a space that has not been renovated since the 1990s and aims to expand educational opportunities, digital learning and access to health resources. Library Executive Director Jessica Spitulski said her team will use the community feedback to shape the final design.  YourErie.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Employees learned in June that all Rite Aid stores in Erie County would close after the company filed for Chapter 11 on May 5. The last three locations will close soon—916 State Street will end its pharmacy on July 24 while the stores at 827 N. Center and 105 W. Main will shut on July 27, with prescriptions transferred to customers' chosen pharmacies.  The Erie Times-News

  • Court documents show that a witness saw Woodard try to drive away when a state parole officer made physical contact, and nearly three weeks after he was fatally shot—he would have turned 44 today—state police and the district attorney's office continue to investigate the case in Erie.  YourErie.com
  • Local police are asking for help finding 16 year old Isaac Farrell who left his home on East Lake Road in Harborcreek Township around 12:45 p.m. Monday and was last seen wearing black basketball shorts, a blue shirt, and carrying a light gray backpack with medications after leaving his phone behind, so anyone with information should call PSP Erie at 814-898-1641 (incident PA25-903274).  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erie Playhouse and United Way are hosting a free summer program called Playtime In Your Neighborhood that meets every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Erie Center for Arts & Technology (run by local staff). The camp gives students fun activities like campfire stories and crafts (three more sessions are planned) to keep them busy while school is out.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a draft master plan for Union City Dam that outlines new wildlife management, community partnerships, and recreational programs over the next 25 years—while reporting that over 27,000 visitors spent nearly $1 million in 2023. Public comments on the plan will be accepted until Aug. 15 with drafts available at the Waterford Township Building or by email.  The Erie Times-News
