COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tall Ships Erie Festival will return to Dobbins Landing from Aug 21-24 with tall ships like the Lettie G. Howard available for deck tours—visitors can also enjoy food, live music, kids' activities and a parade starting at 3 p.m. on Aug 21, with tickets ranging from $12 to $149.  The Erie Times-News
  • The inaugural Rides for the Rise motorcycle rally will take place on July 19 at Rebich Investment Amphitheater at Liberty Park with live music, food trucks, vendors and a motorcycle parade that starts at noon from West Erie Plaza with a police escort. Local nonprofit Save the Youth 814 organizes the event to benefit Erie youth programs & has worked with city officials to support local families.  The Erie Times-News

  • Oliver’s Rooftop on Erie’s bayfront will temporarily change its name to John Oliver’s Rooftop during the week of July 19 as the talk show host plans to visit. The restaurant will offer two special cocktails—You'll Never Sip Alone and Last Drink Tonight—and local businesses are preparing for the SeaWolves game where the team will be known as—Moon Mammoths—.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Erie police linked warmer weather to a jump in crime calls, which rose from around 900 to 1,000 per week in January and nearly 1,500 in July—prompting increased patrols in hotspots like Dobbins Landing and efforts to address spikes in violent incidents and home improvement fraud.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Erie Benedictine Sister Diane Rabe was installed — on July 11 — as temporary administrator for one year when Sister Stephanie Schmidt ended her five-year term as prioress at the 6101 East Lake Road monastery. A temporary monastic council of five sisters was also named to support her during this transition.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Presque Isle State Park banned swimming at Beach 11 on July 15 due to high E. coli levels that put children + those with weakened immune systems at risk. Shallow, stagnant water + boat activity and vegetation have made the issue a recurring concern as officials test the water daily until it improves.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie's Bayfront Parkway from Sassafras to Holland will close after Labor Day for one year to expedite construction and save an estimated $8 million following public input. The closure will let the State Street intersection reopen in fall 2026 and finish work on Holland Street in 2027—drivers will be encouraged to use 12th Street with new traffic controls for safety.  The Erie Times-News
  • Pennsylvania’s America250PA is preparing for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 with statewide projects that include art installations, a mobile exhibit, tree planting, and charity work, and Erie will host a liberty bell and tree project plus a free concert series and educational programs.  The Erie Times-News
  • Millcreek’s Government Study Commission will vote on its final report for a new government structure on July 21 at 4 p.m. (or July 28 if needed) and must file the report by Aug. 4, with recommendations set to be discussed at town hall meetings on Sept. 8, Sept. 22 and Oct. 6 before a township vote on Nov. 4. Township supervisors have stated they want to vet commission communications for accuracy, but the commission retains control over its public messages.  The Erie Times-News
