Good morning, Erie. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 22nd of June.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Most Erie County school districts approved budgets that will raise school taxes for 2025-26 while Erie and Union City kept taxes flat—homeowners in the Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion program will see smaller increases. Corry Area School District will vote on its proposed no-tax budget on June 23—final decisions may affect local tax bills.  The Erie Times-News
  • Money Inc recognized McDowell High School and its Intermediate division along with Titusville High School for strong academics, graduating at 27th and 20th place respectively based on factors like test scores, AP courses & extracurricular programs. The rankings note high graduation rates and robust student support as keys to the schools' honors.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal changes in the $42.5 billion broadband program now require states to choose low-cost proposals instead of fiber — a shift that critics worry will give rural customers less reliable internet. Pennsylvania officials have 90 days to rescore proposals for about 255,000 homes and businesses lacking fast access — a change many say risks meeting future demand.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cancer survivors and caregivers took part in the 40th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Erie at the Hagerty Family Events Center on June 21, where they began the event with an initial lap. Vendor tables added to the community support by offering items (such as Troll Toss and wreaths) during the day.  The Erie Times-News
