  • The Hamot Foundation’s BUILD CDC is moving ahead with converting the former Erie Schools Administration Building into 22 supportive housing apartments (with 12,000 square feet of commercial space) for the chronically homeless. Erie Housing Authority will soon decide on project-based vouchers while officials work to close a $6 million funding gap and hope residents begin moving in by next summer.  YourErie.com
  • JET-24/FOX-66 staff volunteered at the ANNA Shelter on the Founder’s Day of Caring to help care for animals and boost shelter supplies—volunteers, including Sean Lafferty, Craig Flint and Tom Atkins, worked on pet sitting and cleaning tasks. The team also collected donations from employees and the community that filled a truck and an SUV—demonstrating strong local support for the shelter.  YourErie.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A woman died after she jumped from the I-90 bridge over Six Mile Creek, with state police and Harborcreek firefighters arriving around 6:45 p.m. Friday and her body recovered from the gorge — the Erie County coroner said she was estimated to be between 40 and 50 years old with no identification and the incident was witnessed by another motorist.  YourErie.com

  • L.L. Bean opened its new store on Peach Street last Friday on the 6700 block (with nearly 150 customers lining up) and gave the first 100 a $50 gift card. The event also featured the Boot-Mobile and included a $10,000 donation to Glennwood Park YMCA (to support summer camp access), marking a strong business debut in Erie.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Supreme Court approved DNA testing for Willie James Hardy, a 67-year-old serving a life sentence for the 1993 murder of his ex-girlfriend Deborah Will in Erie, and the case will return to the County Common Pleas Court to set tests on items—including twine, fingernail scrapings and items from the victim’s purse—that may prove his innocence.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erie County Health inspected restaurants from June 11-18 and found 6 critical violations, including 3 at Quick Stop 2 and single issues at Straw Hat Deli and iFamily Dollar—officials will follow up to correct these food safety problems.  The Erie Times-News
  • Dr. Vincent Proy of Ahn Saint Vincent warns Erie residents that temperatures will reach the 90s in the next few days and advises staying indoors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—he recommends drinking eight ounces of water every 20 minutes when outside and watching for signs of heat exhaustion, especially among the elderly and children.  YourErie.com
