- ➤ Erie is moving forward with its Safe Streets for All initiative to reduce traffic accidents and improve pedestrian and cyclist safety by 2035, after officials recorded 5,636 accidents, 34 fatalities and 166 severe injury crashes between 2019 and 2023. City leaders gathered public input and are now preparing to roll out improvements such as enhanced crosswalks, modified signals and traffic calming measures—while planning to secure additional federal funds for future upgrades. - ➤ Local advocates report that Pennsylvania’s Medicaid reimbursement rate for in-home caregivers remains too low—$20.63 per hour—causing a shortage that forces many older residents and individuals with disabilities into costlier institutional care. A recent study recommends a 23% funding increase to help pay caregivers competitive wages and keep care available in Erie and across the commonwealth. The Erie Times-News
- ➤ On June 4, USPS officials from Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh showcased millions in upgrades in Erie that include a renovated Sorting and Delivery Center at 2108 E. 38th St and a new package-sorting line handling 8,000 parcels daily. The agency has introduced new Next Generation Delivery Vehicles — built with air conditioning, cupholders, and safety cameras — which will soon replace the old LLVs to serve 148,000 customers and act as a transfer point for another 150,000. - ➤ Work on the Depot Road Improvement Project in Harborcreek Township will close a section of the road between the I-90 on and off ramps for about one month starting Monday, June 9, with detour routes on I-90, Route 430, and Route 89 available. PennDOT will maintain ramp access—northbound Depot Road traffic can reach the I-90 eastbound on-ramp while southbound traffic can use the westbound on-ramp. YourErie.com
