BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Pharmacy giants Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens will close 1,000 stores nationwide in 2025—Pennsylvania is hit hardest as 172 Rite Aid locations, including three in Erie, are set to shut while CVS and Walgreens cut select stores. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy on May 5 and the planned moves come amid shifts in consumer habits and market conditions. The Erie Times-News

- ➤ On Friday, Erie County officials confirmed that the dangerous chemical BTMPS—detected in street drugs since March following an April search warrant seizure of several hundred grams from a local dealer—has been found in local drugs, raising alarms about the illicit drug supply chain. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Erie County Department of Health inspected restaurants and stores selling unpackaged food from May 21st to 28th and found one critical violation at Dollar General when a gap in its exterior door did not block rodents, insects or animals — the inspections also recorded noncritical violations at other locations and noted that issues at some sites were corrected. - ➤ Erie County Council will vote on June 3 on a plan to use $433,620 in federal funds from housing ICE detainees for prison overtime — a measure supported by County Executive Brenton Davis but opposed by council members concerned about ethics and due process. The county holds a long-standing contract for detainee housing and currently reports 30 ICE detainees — a fact that has sparked heated public debate. The Erie Times-News
- ➤ Pennsylvania Auditor General Tim DeFoor released a report showing the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority (ECGRA) followed the law after local lawmakers, including Erie County Executive Brenton Davis, requested an audit in 2024.
