CRIME NEWS

  • Erie mother Rotesha Silveus, charged with first-degree murder for allegedly strangling her 18-year-old daughter in Tampa, was declared competent on January 29 and had her May 14 hearing continued with a second scheduled for August 20 while she remains at Hillsborough County Jail—court documents show a DNA swab motion was approved.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several Erie County school districts held contested school board nomination races on May 20 and unofficial vote totals showed incumbents and challengers securing party nods in Erie, General McLane, Girard, Iroquois, North East, and Northwestern districts. Races will continue in November when candidates will compete for four-year seats—setting the course for upcoming school board elections.  The Erie Times-News
  • Tech Memorial graduate and Pro Football Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff returned to Erie on May 21 to speak at the Jefferson Educational Society speaker series — sharing his football experiences with the local audience.  The Erie Times-News

  • On Tuesday, only 25% of registered voters in Erie County cast ballots, and thousands of independent voters were turned away because of the closed primary system.
