  • Erie families planted their own vegetables today at a new community garden that opened to give residents a chance to grow fresh food — local organizers will guide gardeners through the season.  YourErie.com
  • Friends of the Erie County Library are hosting the Swing into Spring Book Sale at the Admiral Room in the Blasco Library (160 E. Front St) from today until May 17 with varying hours each day. Visitors may drop off gently used books, CDs, DVDs, and puzzles at the library lobby and browse selections in genres like gardening, cooking, fiction, and non-fiction.  The Erie Times-News

  • L.L.Bean’s Bootmobile, a pickup truck transformed into a giant boot, will tour Erie today through May 17 with surprise stops ahead of the new store opening at Erie Marketplace in Summit Township in June — the company is donating $10,000 to the Glenwood Park YMCA for youth programs.  The Erie Times-News

  • Scallywags Pirate Adventures in Erie is preparing for its opening weekend tomorrow as guests set sail in Presque Isle Bay near Dobbin’s Landing — the crew is now full after hiring actor Captain Skull to play the villain. All crew members must be at least 16 years old, with some roles requiring 18, and future openings will accept applications — interested candidates can apply when positions become available.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercyhurst University's undergraduate commencement on May 11 at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie saw the class of 2025 earn 727 degrees—a steep climb from the 12 graduates in 1929—as awards were given with senior James Tonks V receiving the Carpe Diem Award for campus impact and Marley Ramon honored with the Bishop's Award for Academic Excellence.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie zoo officials and Erie Events are planning a partnership that will provide $500,000 a year+if the city transfers 106 acres that include the zoo property, Glenwood Park, JC Martin Golf Course and Flo Fabrizio Ice Arena to allow expansion and prevent closure. City officials including the mayor and city solicitor have expressed concern+while residents are invited to vote in a poll with results set to be announced after noon on May 21.  The Erie Times-News

  • Taylor Miller lost her battle with addiction and mental illness from an accidental fentanyl overdose, and her family now carries on her mission through the Taylor’s Hope nonprofit—using a new billboard along Route 20 and Interchange Road to honor local victims. The nonprofit will host its Afternoon of Hope event tomorrow from 3 to 6 p.m.—in Perry Square to offer support to those facing substance abuse.  YourErie.com
