COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Millcreek Township invites residents to join an ongoing litter cleanup led by Betsy Wiest. Participants pick up trash bags, gloves, and safety vests at the township building (staff provide guidelines and note areas needing attention).  TalkErie.com
  • Hunter Lytle, executive director of CAFE, discussed America250 celebrations and upcoming summer neighborhood events on Friday as his non-profit leads CelebrateErie and other local cultural events.  TalkErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Judy Alstadt reflects on her late husband Don Alstadt (an Erie native who invented Chemlok) as he was recently inducted into the National Inventor's Hall of Fame, celebrating his creative legacy.  The Erie Times-News
  • Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will launch his live tour in Erie tomorrow at Warner Theatre with tickets starting at $81; the tour continues through Dec. 12 in New York and includes stops in several major cities.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie Cemetery, known for its notable locals, hosts special events including themed walking tours and the annual Dine Among the Departed dinner (featuring fine dining and local history) for community members.  The Erie Times-News
  • EMTA and the Erie Downtown Partnership will host the fifth 14th Fest on Thursday, June 11, on 14th Street between French and Holland for a summer celebration from 5 to 10 p.m.—live music by Geek Army at 5:30 p.m. and Twisted Lid at 8 p.m. will feature an awards ceremony.  TalkErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erie School Board met on May 13 at the district administration building (1910 Sassafras St.) to revise student attire rules and restrict cellphone use from the first bell until the last bell. The board also voted on a preliminary 2026-27 budget based on a 2.8% property tax increase.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nonprofit wildlife rehabilitators in Pennsylvania report a surge in calls and rising costs as young and injured animals increase this spring, and experts advise Erie residents to call a licensed rehabilitator instead of handling them themselves (costs include care for raptors and increased food needs).  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Law Day celebration yesterday at Warner Theatre, the Erie County Bar Association honored attorney Philip Friedman with the Chancellor of the Bar Award — offered for nearly 50 years of legal service — and recognized honorees Jennie Hagerty, Denise Pekelnicky, and Marcus Atkinson.  The Erie Times-News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Realtor.com data shows that Erie County home prices edged up in February to $182,500 from January's $181,000+ Single-family homes saw modest increases while condo and townhome prices dropped sharply, and overall recorded sales rose by 5.3% compared to last year.  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer was unanimously awarded the Calder Trophy by the New York Islanders as rookie of the year, becoming the youngest honoree at 18 (223 days old). He dedicated the honor to his mother during a May 13 interview.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships return this weekend at Sinai Sports Saturday; 83 lifters compete from 7:45 a.m. to awards sessions at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The US Canine Scent Sports Classic Trail is Sunday at Erie County Technical School with 30 dogs in scent tests (from nearby states).  TalkErie.com
