COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie Zoo euthanized its last two meerkats—Malika, 13, and Nora, 14—on March 26 after they were diagnosed with liver cancer and other age-related illnesses. The zoo is renovating the exhibit for sand cats this summer as staff offers grief support to help cope with the loss.  The Erie Times-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jessica Warren purchased Brewerie at Union Station—making it the only woman-owned brewery on the Lake Erie Ale Trail—and started updating the craft beers using natural ingredients while keeping its traditions intact. Her brother-in-law Tate Warren refined the recipes to maintain a consistent flavor and invite customers back.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Edinboro will host a free three-day Art & Music Festival from May 16th to 18th at downtown Edinboro and Goodell Gardens & Homestead to celebrate Appalachian art, music and culture. Donna the Buffalo headlines the event — and visitors can join hands-on workshops, local artisan stalls, and children's activities.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Millcreek Township's Government Study Commission voted to recommend a government with five elected council members and a professional manager because of financial and management issues, and voters will decide on the change this November. If approved, elections will occur in 2026 and the new government will start in 2027.  The Erie Times-News
  • Candidates for Erie County Executive were interviewed on the Joel Natalie Show with Brenton Davis on May 8th, Christina Vogel on May 9th and Perry Wood on May 12th—each discussion presenting their visions for county leadership.  TalkErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erie County Health Department will host a free measles, mumps and rubella vaccine clinic on May 15 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Eastside YMCA in Harborcreek Township for adults 18 and older—children should check with their healthcare provider as the county faces its first measles outbreak in 35 years with eight reported cases. More than 1,000 measles cases have been reported in the U.S. in 2025, and officials hope the clinic will help stop further spread.  The Erie Times-News
