EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 12, over 700 students graduated from Mercyhurst University at Erie Insurance Arena and the ceremony honored James Tonks with the Carpe Diem Award—he plans to complete his master’s and pursue a job in college athletics.  YourErie.com
  • Gannon University held two commencement ceremonies at Erie Insurance Arena on May 10, awarding more than 900 degrees to undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate ceremony took place early in the day while the graduate celebration happened later — a milestone event for the school.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania will hold its primary elections in May to choose candidates for the November general election. Voters in Erie will cast ballots that decide who advances – the results will affect what choices appear later.  Erie Reader
  • On Monday, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission said that the temporary boating rules on Conneaut Lake, which were in place from May 8, have been lifted—water levels returned to normal so boaters can now use standard speeds.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 12, Calley Means, an advisor to RFK Jr., spoke at Bayfront Convention Center in Erie — addressing nearly 350 long-term care professionals — and warned that Americans pay three times more for health care while living seven years less than people in other countries. He blamed the food industry and ultra-processed foods bought with SNAP benefits for rising chronic illnesses — and he noted that the government will soon phase out artificial dyes from the food supply.  The Erie Times-News
