CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded to calls at The Reserves at Millcreek in Millcreek Township on Sunday night regarding reports of a man breaking a car window with a hammer — they identified 36-year-old Patrick Kanonczyk, who was fatally shot after a brief exchange and pronounced dead at the scene.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie Bureau of Police swore in four new officers on May 9—adding diversity to its 194-member force with the hiring of its seventh Hispanic officer and first Iraqi officer. The department hired 66 officers since 2021 and will test new candidates on Aug. 2.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie County elections officials announced that several polling locations will change for the primary on May 20, with Erie Ward 4 Districts 6 and 7 moving to Strong Vincent Middle School, Millcreek Township District 4 relocating to the Erie County Community College gymnasium, and Union Township assigned a new address—voters with accessibility challenges at Eastminster Presbyterian Church will be provided alternative ballots on election day. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and mail-in ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on primary day.  The Erie Times-News
  • On May 9, the Commonwealth Court upheld Erie Judge Erin Connelly Marucci’s dismissal of petitions from parents who sought to remove school board members in Millcreek and North East over COVID-19 mask mandates, saying the boards acted within their rights to protect student health. The ruling noted that disagreements with board policies should be resolved at the ballot box—not through the courts.  The Erie Times-News
