COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Orphan Angels, a no-kill cat shelter on West Lake Road, finished remodeling its headquarters to remove cages and create more space for cats. The shelter added an on-site cat clinic for vaccines, surgeries and spay and neuter procedures that has started taking appointments from friends and family and will soon open to the public.  YourErie.com
  • The Penn State Behrend Athletic Department, in partnership with United Way of Erie County, will host a Trash to Treasure Sale on May 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the campus’ Junker Center (5103 Station Road) where donated items such as dorm furniture, electronics, clothing and houseware will be sold with a $5 entry fee and cash-only purchases required until 9 a.m., while donations will be accepted until May 16.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman faces criminal charges after Erie police say she waved a .380-caliber handgun in Perry Square on May 8 at about 5:15 p.m.—officers detained her, confiscated the weapon, and took her for a mental health evaluation with no injuries reported.  The Erie Times-News

  • The Erie Philharmonic closed its 2024-25 season with a performance of Verdi's Requiem and a Drink Along, Sing Along fundraiser—bringing chorus members and local music fans together in a festive evening event.  Erie Reader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Erie Water Works partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful during Drinking Water Week to install a 50-foot litter boom on May 8 at the Myrtle Street storm outfall and to clean trash from the bay. Staff and volunteers removed pollutants like tires, plastic bags, and mattresses — actions that help protect local water and promote clean tap water.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four new police officers were sworn in at City Council chambers at Erie City Hall on May 9 to replace retiring officers (Malik Alassedy, Nicholas Brundage, Matthew Crosby, and Emiliano Urbieta), marking a step toward greater diversity.
