  • Erie County corrections officer Lisa Mills, known as Big Momma, spent her 57th birthday in the hospital from March 11th to 18th after a stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis—on Sunday the Erie community gathered at Perry Hiway Hose Company on Oliver Road to raise funds for her treatment. She plans to head to Texas for clinical trials as she fights the illness.  YourErie.com

  • Freedom House celebrated 11 graduates who will continue their careers in medicine. The event honored their achievements — it recognized the graduates' commitment to healthcare.  YourErie.com
  • PennWest Edinboro University held its spring commencement on May 3 at McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro where graduates received their degrees. Family members and university officials attended the ceremony.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. David Almeida of Erie Retina Research introduced a Take Care of Your Sight display at Erie International Airport—a display in a passenger waiting area that uses an eye chart and Amsler grid to help detect vision changes.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie International Airport now offers a vision screening display — featuring a vision chart, Amsler grid, and retina risk checklist — in its secure waiting room for air travelers to check their sight before boarding their flights. Dr. David Almeida of Erie Retina Research said the display gives travelers about 10 to 15 minutes to get basic eye health information, and a QR code leads them to further details.  The Erie Times-News
