COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday night at Erie City Hall, community members observed the 39th annual Workers Memorial Day service with two bell rings in memory of Igor Akopyan, an Erie man who died after falling down an elevator shaft at a West 12th Street business—attendees then moved to Perry Square to place a wreath for all workers lost to job-related incidents. Local Representative Pat Harkins said he supported extending OSHA protections to public workers and noted that House Bill 308 now heads to the Senate—his remarks followed prayers and words from a local OSHA director during the ceremony.  YourErie.com
  • Waldameer Park is launching its new Tasty Tator stand for the 2025 season, replacing the old Potato Patch with a larger menu that includes Italian sausage with peppers and onions, fried shrimp, battered cod and deep-fried Oreos. The new stand will serve both the water park and dry park—using separate vendor windows for each—while additional drink, Dippin' Dots and ice cream stands are added to ease long lines.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie United Methodist Alliance ended its 13th season of the Our Neighbors’ Place overflow shelter that provided safe space for those without a home during harsh winter months.   • Lake Erie Lights return to Presque Isle State Park to mark 10 years of PI Lighthouse tours when both the Presque Isle Lighthouse and Erie Land Lighthouse open tours Friday, May 2 at 10 a.m. through Memorial Day weekend—tickets cost between $5 and $12 and visitors can experience a recreated summer kitchen showing old lighthouse keeper routines.  YourErie.com

  • Mark and Tammy Ornowski will open a new Crumbl Cookies store in Summit Township on May 2 at 6839 Peach St. Loyal fans have traveled from Erie and nearby areas and will line up at 8 a.m. on Friday to try the rotating menu as the shop will operate Monday through Saturday.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erie County Community College was awarded a $1 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to expand dual enrollment programs for high school students. The two-year funding will begin in July — giving more local students a chance to earn college credits while still in high school.  YourErie.com

  • On Monday night, the seven-member Millcreek government study commission met at the municipal building to review findings on a new form of government — Bill Schaaf said the group could announce its recommendation before the end of May and will hold public seminars for voters.  YourErie.com
