  • Erie's longtime radio DJ Mojo McKay, whose real name was Michael Sroka, died on April 22 at 62 after a 35-year career as a morning host. He was laid off from iHeartMedia in August 2024 due to nationwide cuts—leaving a legacy that many local listeners will remember.  The Erie Times-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Erie County coroner Lyell Cook identified 79-year-old Judy Jackson from Erie as the victim of the fatal Millcreek fire on Easter Sunday — a toxicology report will determine her cause of death as officials continue investigating the blaze.  YourErie.com
  • On Tuesday around 1:07 p.m., a car driven by a Saint Vincent valet crashed through a first-story window of the Hardner Building at the hospital campus, prompting an evacuation and diverting helicopter traffic to Erie International Airport while firefighters extracted the driver—who was treated in the emergency department and is in stable condition—as building inspectors assessed the damage.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erie County high school students took part in a teen driver safety contest on Tuesday where roughly 45 students navigated obstacles, vehicle assessments and tests to practice safe driving techniques. Community safety partners hosted the event — awarding cash prizes for top placements — and plan to expand the competition statewide.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie County United will host a housing townhall on April 26 from 12-3 p.m. at 1720 Holland St. to press mayoral candidates for fair solutions to rising rents and a declining population—with an aim to secure safe, affordable homes for all residents.  The Erie Times-News
  • Sen. Dave McCormick visited Erie on April 21—he toured modern labs at Penn State Behrend, an athletic center at Eagle's Nest Corp and a shipbuilding and repair facility at Donjon Shipbuilding, meeting local leaders to learn about the region's growing technology and industry.  The Erie Times-News
  • City residents will be able to drop off unwanted electronics, smoke detectors, and up to six tires at a recycling event on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. held at the Municipal Garage on Holland St.—a photo ID is required and hazardous materials and tires on rims will not be accepted.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erie County health officials said that a measles outbreak which infected eight residents appears contained because the recent cases were in quarantine and the incubation period from the last exposure ends April 26. A free MMR vaccine clinic was held April 22 at the Zem Zem Shrine Club—about 60 adults received shots and more clinics are planned.  The Erie Times-News

    The Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network (SSJNN) seeks a dedicated and meticulous Grants Specialist to lead and expand our grant funding efforts. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Grants Specialist will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities, writing grant proposals and reports, and maintaining grant contract compliance. This position will work closely with fundraising, accounting and program staff and should enjoy working in a fast-paced, evolving environment, and demonstrate the ability to embrace SSJNN’s mission to empower richly diverse and historically disadvantaged neighborhoods. This is a full-time, on-site position. Compensation of at least $25.00/hour, with a generous benefits package.
