CULTURE NEWS

  • Band Together Erie will host a free autism-friendly open mic event on April 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Kellar’s: A Modern Magic & Comedy Club on State St. in downtown Erie—featuring cameo performances by local musician Monica Lewis as emcee and Moondog, and offering free pizza and soft drinks.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie’s Sikh Temple hosted its annual Vaisakhi celebration Sunday to mark the 326th anniversary of Khalsa's birth with cultural music, sweet scents, and traditional treats as local leaders including Mayor Joe Schember attended. A representative from Governor Shapiro's office declared April as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month, and the community will welcome a November event to honor Guru Nanak.  YourErie.com
  • Erie High held its first Culture Night where students celebrated their heritage. School officials said the new event will become an annual celebration of the diverse traditions of the student body.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie City Council is reviewing its immigration law (local officials are checking current policies) and will propose changes soon (public input may be considered).  YourErie.com
  • House Bill 472 passed on April 11 with bipartisan support — it removes the fee for homeless youth under 18 to get a driver’s license or ID if they are enrolled in school. The bill now heads to the Senate and will allow use of a shelter or school address along with social worker approval if enacted.  YourErie.com
