BUSINESS NEWS

  • Big Lots in Erie and Meadville, which closed after bankruptcy, are set to reopen on May 15 under new ownership by Variety Wholesalers. The stores will be remodeled to offer a wider range of merchandise including clothing, home decor and health and beauty items — with addresses at 2215 W. 12th St. in Erie and 820 Water Street in Meadville.  The Erie Times-News
  • Dominick's Diner closed its doors in downtown Erie last Friday after a 68-year run (customers came in all week for one last meal and the diner sold out of its famous meatball omelette by 10 a.m.) as it was sold to a new owner who is expected to bring changes.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Award winning actor Aaron Tveit will perform at Mercyhurst University on May 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center — drawing fans from 23 states — and tickets cost from $40 to $65 with a $3 processing fee.  Mercyhurst University
  • Erie High School held its first-ever Culture Night on Thursday in the gym where more than 100 students and families celebrated by sharing foods, cultural attire, and talents from 53 countries—principal Don Orlando said the event honored the school’s diverse community.  YourErie.com
  • Waterford resident Isaac Waite, 27, is on a new reality TV show called Lights, Camera, Friendship on the Spectrum that follows young adults with autism — he was chosen after submitting an audition tape. The episodes with him will be shown at Mercyhurst University on Sunday at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and will stream online starting April 16 — the series later will be available on its website and on Red Coral Universe.  The Erie Times-News

  • Federal actions are affecting clean water and public health efforts in Erie—local officials say changes in funding and tariffs are raising concerns about sustaining safe water and health projects. The impact may challenge current projects and slow future improvements.  Erie Reader

  • Today, the City of Erie Fire Department accepts applications for new firefighters until April 27. Testing for selected candidates is set for June 21—assistant chief Gregory Purchase said this is the first hiring in two years and another is not expected soon.  YourErie.com
  • Fairview Township Water Authority ended its boil water advisory for District 3 today after two rounds of testing confirmed no microbial contamination following a Monday mechanical error that reduced chlorine levels below the safe minimum. Residents are advised to flush their taps for one minute before using the water for cooking or drinking.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie taxpayers must file their income tax returns (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) by Tuesday, April 15 to avoid late-filing penalties; those who may need more time can request a six-month extension by submitting Form 4868 by the deadline.  The Erie Times-News
