ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Saturday morning, a car slammed into an apartment building on the 700 block of Rice Avenue in Girard Township, forcing the evacuation of three apartments—home to six people, four cats and one dog—while first responders removed the vehicle, detained the driver after he declined treatment, and contacted the American Red Cross for support.  YourErie.com

  • Whippy Dip opened its 60th summer today at West 26th and Chestnut streets, serving customers daily. Owner Katie Huya Gress and her father Leonard Huya credit the shop’s success to popular treats like blue moon ice cream and chili dogs—together with a hardworking staff of high school students.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting May 7, regular driver’s licenses will not work for boarding planes in Erie; drivers must get a Real ID by showing proof of identity, social security and address at a driver’s license center. Erie residents can visit the center at Summit Towne Center at 7200 Peach St. to receive a Real ID on the spot for a fee of 30 dollars plus a renewal charge—ensuring they meet new security standards for air travel and federal access.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erie County Department of Health inspected restaurants from March 27 to April 3 and found four critical violations at Bob Evans (5739 Buffalo Road), Wendy's (4186 Buffalo Road), Gold Star Chinese Restaurant (31 N. Main St. in Union City) and Wagon Wheel Bar and Grill (2052 Edinboro Road). It also found noncritical issues at Little Ceasers (1025 Parade St.) and Moe's Southwest Grille (2052 Edinboro Road) while confirming that earlier problems were fixed at Grape City Beer and Mini Mart (111 E. Main St.) and Erie Shish Kabob (1023 State St.).  The Erie Times-News
