CRIME NEWS

  • A house fire on Thursday morning at the 400 block of East 7th Street was ruled arson when crews contained the blaze around 10 a.m., and police arrested a man (63-year-old John H. Mease) at the scene on multiple charges.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Erie Art Museum hosted its 102nd annual Spring Show on East 5th Street yesterday to launch its spring season by showcasing 67 new art works in sculpture, photography, and painting. Executive director Laura Domencic said five winners received a $500 cash prize—this art display will run until August 10.  YourErie.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • International Recycling Group canceled its $300 million plastics recycling plant on East Lake Road due to financial hurdles—such as a funding hold from the U.S. Department of Energy, rising tariffs, and funding issues—and the loss has been called a setback for the community; the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership CEO said they are working to repurpose $5 million from the Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program for new investments.  YourErie.com

  • On April 4, parents and students gathered at Blessed Sacrament School (2510 Greengarden Road) to protest plans to close the school this year.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erie County health officials said they contacted over 200 of 227 people exposed last week to a child with measles and reported no new cases have come in, although three confirmed cases (the county's first since 1991) were recorded. They added that symptoms may take up to 21 days to appear (some of those exposed were under 1 and likely not vaccinated).  The Erie Times-News
