  • Volunteer coordinator Sherri Gould at the Erie City Mission (1017 French St.) described how volunteers strengthen the organization’s work and encouraged local residents to support its outreach programs.  The Erie Times-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In January, employees at Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair in Erie built ships, barges and converted vessels while performing repair, maintenance and steel assembly work + photos show demanding welding, steel cutting and drydocking under below-freezing temperatures.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • FILM 1020 ended its program on a high note, showcasing local films and creative talent (a boost for Erie’s cultural scene).  Erie Reader
  • Idlestar presents a mix of metal, comedy and punk acts at Lavery Bunker in a series of events (held on Wednesdays through March and early April) that build to Centennial Hall's grand reopening on April 12.  Erie Reader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie International Airport maintains normal operations despite TSA pay issues; executive director Derek Martin said agents walking off would be fired immediately. Security checks remain on schedule with no delays or lines reported.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Erie Metropolitan Transportation Authority is upgrading its mobile fare system to include QR codes and tap-to-pay options starting April 13. Riders can still use cash, though tokens and pennies will no longer be accepted (the Token Transit app updates automatically).  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 17, Gannon defeated Indiana (Pa.) 81-74 at Highmark Events Center, advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Mercyhurst Prep Lakers and Sewickley Academy Panthers vied for a berth in the PIAA Class 2A boys basketball final on Tuesday at Sharon.  The Erie Times-News
