COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A PennDOT project on Bayfront Parkway is causing detours as it improves access until completion in 2027, but all bayfront attractions, hotels & restaurants remain open. Local business owners worry that the changed signage may confuse tourists during the busy summer season.  The Erie Times-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Greenfield Healthcare & Rehabilitation in Millcreek Township was cited by the Pennsylvania Department of Health after a resident suffered a broken hip and torn wrist ligament on Sept. 29 due to improper lifting; the patient was hospitalized for 10 days and staff were reeducated on proper Hoyer lift procedures.  The Erie Times-News

  • Erie Events’ executive director Gus Pine provided updates on the bayfront market house project (a $14 million investment) set to create new event space along the waterfront in Erie during 2026; further details on milestones and timelines will follow.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Millcreek Township School District is reducing fines for student vaping by allowing those caught to join a cessation program through Breathe PA; repeat offenders will face limits on extra-curricular activities next school year.  The Erie Times-News
  • Mercyhurst University has secured over $1.6 million in funds to launch Studio 26 and support entrepreneurial, technology and health programs in Erie and northwest Pennsylvania — the funding includes a $500,000 ECGRA grant, a $250,000 Beehive grant and $880,000 in federal support.  Mercyhurst University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Dan Laughlin introduced a bill March 12 to raise fines for anglers intentionally snagging fish from $150 to $250, a step supported by the Fish & Boat Commission to protect species like steelhead & trophy trout; the bill now awaits review by the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee.  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gannon's men's basketball team won the NCAA Atlantic region title 81-74 against Indiana (Pa.) on March 17 at Highmark Events Center. The win earned the Golden Knights an Elite Eight bid and set up a national quarterfinal at Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh on March 25.  The Erie Times-News
